Faculty Writing Communities
Dedicated time and space to focus on the task of writing and commit to the writing process.
Last fall, the Faculty Development team in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost (EVPP) launched a new Faculty Writing Communities program which held four communities each week. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response to the pilot program, we are expanding the program in 2024-2025 to offer six writing communities.
Writing is one of the central means through which scholars across disciplines disseminate their work. Yet, it is often hard to find time and space to write when teaching, mentorship, service and personal responsibilities are already competing for one’s limited time. The Faculty Writing Communities program is designed to give faculty a dedicated time and space to focus on the task of writing, as well as an opportunity to reinforce commitment and accountability in the writing process.
The program will consist of six communities, each with ten faculty, that will meet in person for two hours each week in a dedicated on-campus space throughout Fall 2024. Faculty will be grouped into communities based on time availability. Because our goal is to sustain strong writing communities, participants in Fall 2024 will be asked to continue as a community member in Spring 2025 based on their interest and availability. The days and times for each of the Fall 2024 Writing Communities are as follows:
- Tuesday 1-3 p.m.
- Wednesday 9-11 a.m.
- Wednesday 1-3 p.m.
- Thursday 9-11 a.m.
- Thursday 1-3 p.m.
- Friday 9-11 a.m
Applicants must be:
- Tenured, Tenure-track, or Professional-track faculty of any rank who meet the following criteria:
- Have a benefits-eligible appointment at UT during the current academic year
Interested faculty can submit an application to participate through our application portal no later than Tuesday, August 20, 2024. Faculty of any rank and from any field may apply to participate.
During the application process, interested faculty will be asked to rank order the six possible community meeting times based on the faculty member’s availability and preference. Interested faculty will also be asked to provide a short description of the writing project(s) on which they will be working during this program.
Decisions about participation will be made on a first-come first-serve basis determined by scheduling availability.
